|
|
My recently aquired trooper has done 63k and, to the previous owners knowledge, has never hads it cam belt replaced.
I was going to attempt this myself but my mechanical knowledge borders on the basic. Having read some related posts it sounds scarrier the more I read. Could I realistically tackle this myself with no specialist tools or am I better off slipping my realiable mechanic some cash in hand?
Any opinions welcomed...

best left to someone who knows what they are doing. the pullys need to be held in place with a special tool, if you get the timing out just a little bit, it could do alot of damage. it shouldnt cost more than £250, and you want a service in with that as well. |

Wow! £250!! assume you are talking belt and FS? I was just thinking of the belt (£20 - Millners) and a couple hours labour charge... £60 or thereabouts. _________________ '94 Big Horn Irmscher LWB, 3.1TD auto. |

It's not difficult - just DON'T get it wrong I've you've never done one before, take it to a mechanic and ask if you can watch? _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

i paid £90 four years ago, belt change and a full service. i hope no one has to pay £250. it was just a top end price. speak to your local garage. but if you do it,and get it wrong. £250 would have been cheap. why not try taking the cambelt cover off and have a look, see if your up to it. |

Thanks for the advice fellas. I think I'll take it to my mechanic and have a look over his shoulder. The consequences of getting it wrong dont bare thinking about. _________________ '94 Big Horn Irmscher LWB, 3.1TD auto. |

|
|
Just had mine done today at a main dealer. £450 for the service and cambelt - and that was the same at all dealers within a 150 mile radius of me. Cheapest independent I found was £350, but I paid the extra to keep the Isuzu service history intact. I called around a lot, and a lot of local independent specialists wanted even more than the main dealer. Unfortunately during the service they changed the front pads as well as they told my wife they were "nearly dangerous" and stung me another £160 for a straightforward service item that costs £16 from Milners, and they also tried to get the back box done for £520 because it was vibrating and would need changing "soon". Thankfully she said no to that! |

At these prices it really does make you think hard whether it really is worth having that stamp.
The labour can be no more than 2 hours tops for a cambelt. The belt is £18 from Milners. ??????? Where is the justification in that price? _________________ '94 Big Horn Irmscher LWB, 3.1TD auto. |

2 hrs labour at say between £60 - £70 the belt itself is obviously slightly more than milners but then you also get a 3yr or 60,000 mile warranty with it so all in i know what i would rather have |

Is the 3 year warranty just the normal one that guarantees the belt for 3 years, but doesn't cover all the other damage that belt failure will cause
Cheers

Folks,
Just contemplating this myself, having done a Pug 405 diesel a couple of times.
Is the locking just down to bolts, or something more tricky? There is mention of a "special tool" above.
I have the CD manual, but just wanted some initial feedback from folks who get their fingernails dirty.

I agree with Dxmedia.
Cam belts on any vehicle can be a sod. and most modern cars you need special tools.
start with small jobs and slowly build up. |
