As I'm looking for a new trooper, I was going to trade my MK3 in and buy a MK1 for off-roading, BUT what would a MK3 LWB be like for off-roading, never seen one at any events I've been to, only MK1's occassionaly. Are MK3s easy to lift and are they capable, obviously a swb would be better but bought a LWB originally for family car so stuck with it.
any advice would be great _________________ Brand New Land Cruiser

Very good I'd say if anything compaired to a mk2 lwb
Lift suspension an inch or two, check for the g80 code under the engine bay (lsd), mud terrain tyres, and should be quite a motor _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

MK2,3, and for 4 are pretty much the same in terms of suspension.

For any extreme stuff you're always going to be better off with a swb, better turning circle, better ramp over angle. _________________ Phil

Not wanting to cause an argument, but I disagree :S
A lwb has it's definate advantages over a swb off road - the longer wheel base means that it can cross terrain in which a swb would be in an axel twisting situation. (this happened earlier today with the frontera putting 2 wheels in the air wilst the monterey went stright over).
I'm not saying that the lwb is better - they both have their advantages, but they also both have their downsides.
Ramp over angle can always be resolved with rock sliders and a little throttle Turning circle, well - just make it a 5 point in stead of a 3 - Hey the swb frontera has a far poorer turning circle than the monterey at the moment !! Although I'm waiting for the wheel spacers to turn up at the moment _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

I'm afraid that i have to disagree, just to compare fairly, i have owned a lwb 2.8td mk1 and now have a swb 2.8 mk1 and this one would knock the socks off my old one off road _________________ |

I'm saying that in some situations the lwb is better, in others the swb is better. Depending what you want from a vehicle off road, it's difficult to say one is better than the other.
It would be interesting to put a swb and lwb directly against each other to see what one can do, and the other can't, but I doubt that it would be possible to arrange a testing grount for such. _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

You would need 2 vehicles in exactly the same trim with exactly the same modifications for a start with a very varied type of terrain!
What i will say is over on our muddy frontera forum most of the more serious off roaders do prefer a lwb
Personally i think its so we can carry more recovery gear and spares
Cheers

They would have to be driven by the same person and be the same specs and same mk to test properly, its not really worth the hassle for the difference _________________ |

I've got a lwb and find at times the extra length when tracks get tight between trees can be a problem and end up using the back end of the roof to rub off them where a swb would drop in between no problems, on some terrain i do find the lwb copes well and can take crossing dips etc without too much effort or lifting wheels. it does have some trouble with ramp over angle but my sills have now been fully modified (bent) to cope with that.
it'll be a very different drive when i lift it and get those disconnects on there!! |
