Just bought '92 lotus trooper.

Starting procedure - turn ignition key - wait for (glow plug?) light to go out - wait for click noise (from somewhere?) - push button (just below ignition key) to fire up.

From cold this is hit/miss and requires use of accelerator to build revs (slowly - lots of whitish smoke) and get engine to stay running otherwise it stalls.

When hot its ok....

Ring any bells?

yeah! starting to wonder? me thinks a former owner has bodged ignition somewhere along the line. It seems to work so not too bothered.

Any idea what click noise is? Was spun a line that the engine *over fuels* if I dont wait for it?

Not to sure, but the light goes out before the plugs stop heating i think, so the click could be the relay  Question
mmmm if i'm right then you could be starting it when the plugs have started to cool, its worth a try when the light goes out rather than waiting.
I cant see how you could get overfuel  Question

as you say Marky the click noise is the glow plug timer relay switching
engine should be started immediately the light goes out
white smoke is sign of glow plug failure or water in diesel
in this case plug failure i would think or as Marky said late starting

check the plugs are having voltage

give them two or three goes of the heater before trying to fire her.

if theyve got current but its not running right id change them, easy enough job!

Id drain the fuel filter too remove any water etc

Theres a good parts place in betws industrial estate - GAP factors, better priced than the one by shands road.

Thanks for all your advice.

I now turn key till light goes out then again till light goes out and fire it up straight away.

Starts ok then - no smoke.

Leave it running for 2-3 minutes before driving off and all is well...
