|
|
Haven't looked at the job yet but will shortly be tackling a oil and filters service. Does the the sump drain plug have a sealing washer, and if so is it re-useable or will I need a new one? I'm thinking of the copper crush washer on my BMC A-series engine's sump plug...
Thanks. |

This is true, I have (on occaision) had to re-use copper washers. Very seldom have I had leaks. you can usually get away with it as long as everything is nice and clean. A series eh? I have a couple of Minis My Self, '62 Wagon, '69 Cooper S and '90 1000. ... I think they all leak oil everywhere but the plug... |

Hi, i don't bother changing copperwashers, just inspect it, that incudes all my tractors & machines.
HOWEVER! if you heat a copper washer with a blow torch until it changes colour it softens the copper then you can reuse it (got me unstuck a couple of times) my grandad told me this, in his day you re-used everything! |

Totaly agree!
What annoy's me is there is more copper, detail & work gone into a 1 penny piece, so why is a copper washer usually around the £1 mark! |

Nice tip about reheating
I've been advised to replace the copper washer on the Frogeye's engine whenever the plug's been off, but that might just be because A-series owners get paranoid about oil leaks!
But I digress... |
