Hi there, great site and heaps of info. I have recently purchased a '97 Lotus Bighorn 3.1 diesel and have been working my way through the fluids and filter changes. I have read somewhere that oil can pass from the transmissions/gear boxes to the transfer cases. If this is so then if I have an auto, theoritically I must put ATF in the transfer case. I have read on other threads that plain 15/40w engine oil is ok for the transfer case. I am now stumped can someone advise on which is the correct oil to is to replace in the transfer case?

Certainly the manual gear/transfer boxes are linked and share oil to a degree although they have sperate fill/drain plugs.  I can't imagine this is the same with the auto box if the transfger case is specced to take normal engine oil.

I would say the transfer will be separate on an auto.

Someone who actually knows will be along soon Very Happy

the oil in the gear box in  both manual and auto boxes is totally separate from the transfer casethere is an oilseal on the mainshaft where the g/box and transfer case  join so you can safely put dexron II or dexron III in the transmission and engine oil in the transfer case we are reccommended to use 5w30 fully synthetic here

I have been told that the manual box and transfer case are common but with a high point in between...
