Help!

I had a look at other threads but could not find quite the info I need.

My starter motor tried to turn over twice and then just clicked. It has done it once before and started from being towed. I am suspicious of the immobilizer as it has one additional to the factory fit built into the alarm, as the light "engine check" flashes as if the immobiliser is on. In the past it has immobolised itself just after starting for no reason and I have had to reset it, so I have worried about the wiring.

However it seems like it is the starter, and the vehicle seems to have been owned by a surfer and has possibly been in the sea deep enough to get to the motor (above hubs as salt damaged slightly to the wheels) and that I suppose could account for it being dodgy even though it is just 4 years old.

QUESTION!- Is it worth taking it off and cleaning it, should I just replace it, will it come off easily, and is there any way to check if it is the immobiliser or anything else?

I have to travel with a wife and baby soon, and do not want to risk it not starting miles away in the cold, if it was just me I would keep getting a tow to start it! I would need to order parts ASAP, anyone know a good place to get one in a couple of days if Partco can't do it reasonably?

Many thanks, Paul

If the starter is clicking then it cant be anything else really, but i would check the electrical connections by taking the leads off giving them a wire brush and a dab of grease then putting them back before you spash out on the £££

It'll almost certainly be the starter solenoid.  You may be able to just replace the solenoid if you're lucky or find a local place that will recondition the starter for you.  Usually its much cheaper than a replacement.  Sometimes you can get some extra time by taking the solenoid apart and rotating the copper disk inside 1/4 to 1/2 a turn and cleaning it with some fine wet and dry.

Thought it would be, just don't want it to be!

Anyone know if it is just as simple as undoing 3 bolts, and taking it off, or if there is something in the way?

Yes, sounds like a starter motor!
But check your battery leads, on the battery, on the starter and where the earth attaches to the chassis.  If you have a poor connection when you engage the starter motor the voltage could drop so low (because of the poor connection) that the immobliser kick's in. A dodgy starter could also give you the same result.

is the battery in good nick
had a flat battery on the tractor at work and that made the starter click cos there wasnt enough poke in the battery to turn it over

if it has been in the sea it would have prob covered the alternator as well

Quite sure the battery is ok, both times it has not started has been after it has been run and warm, no problem starting most of the time. I will check the earth, and leads though.

I am not sure if it has been in the sea, could just be spray, I had to beat the wheels off as the alloy and steel had welded them on with the salt damge. It seems ok underneath, and I have washed it in a few streams and deep puddles!

I just don't understand how a Japanese starter can go so soon. I have had British and Italian ones last 16 years before Shocked

Breakers.

Would a 2.8 or 3.1 starter fit?

Have a look in your yellow pages under auto electrical and see if you can find an alternator/starter specialist who can rebuild it.  Trouble is you probably won't get it done before christmas.
