What kind of oil are you guys running in your 3.1 Diesel Bighorns? How often do you change it and what is the capacity with filter change ? |

As TFM has said, 15/40 whether you go for semi synth or not, that is the manufacturers recommendation. There is very little point in going for a higher rated oil than 15/40 as this is the grade the engine is designed for, later engines with tighter tolerances & in the case of the 3.0 4JX1 motor with its oil operated injection system need 5w-30 fully synthetic but the 3.1 doesn't. Changes at the recommended intervals with a good quality ( read name brand or identifiable source oil) are preferable to spending vast sums on a fully synthetic oil that you don't need. The handbook recommends changes at 10,000 kms or 6000 miles. This would be OK but if you do a lot of short runs then 8000kms or 5000 miles would be better.

Handbook here for the Monterey 3.1 says 5K miles (UK) and IIRC it used to say 3K for the trooper.
Any 15/40 which is sutiable for a turbo diesel engine and is at least a semi - don't put grinding paste mineral oil in an engine. _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :
