Ok. Father in law bought himself a 51 plate Zafira, Y20DTH engine. Did no research on the vehicle first and is now having allsorts of probs with it. Firstly, what i believe is the service light was on and stayed on, so we serviced it, which it really did need judging by the state of the filters, and gave it a good run. At this point the light, (car with spanner through centre?) was still on and we managed to get the reset sequence to turn it off. It came straight back on again and will only go off when vehicle gets to full temp and then turned off and restarted. Car feels really sluggish to drive, got no pulling power and you notice a significant drop in speed when you hit a hill. Am planning on giving EGR valves a cleaning this afternoon, see if that helps, but does anyone have any ideas as what else it could be?? After doing my own research on the vehicles, (i don't like them), have discovered that there are 14 common problems with these cars, but can't find out exactly what they are. Anybody know??
All ideas, (or a gallon of petrol and a box of matches!), will be gratefully received! _________________ If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |

Its the checkengine light so its a sensor and most likley the air mass sensor or air flow meter as its also called. _________________ 2 New Troopers ! |

never had anything to do with the Zafira you say you have a problem with the service light Mia is it the light in the pic below if it is then it needs to be plugged in to turn it off most diagnostic computers should be able to do this and also tell what faults if any are stored in the memory hope this helps

Gribble....... Have read about this problem and also read that you can check if this sensor is faulty by running the car without it connected. Any idea if it works?
Grandad......... It is light A that is causing the bother, have arranged to have it plugged into diagnostics next week. (Thats been a mission, finding someone with the right bit of kit to do so as our local vauxhall dealer has recently gone into administration).
Cleaned the EGR valve anyway as it was about an inch thick in s***!

Yes if its gone then unplugging it and a test drive should make no difference to performance.
I think the normal OBD II code readers will work on this model too. _________________ 2 New Troopers ! |

Hi if there are no other symptoms - when under acceleration or when the engine is required to work harder and the eml comes on 99% of the time its the MAF
if the light comes on from starting then you need the codes reading

Right,.... further investigations reveal.... (dum, dum, duum!)
When cold the eml will come on after about 12 seconds and stay on. Once the car reaches full temperature, you can turn it off,and straight back on again and light will stay off.
Tried unplugging the sensor, and this bought the light back on immediatly, even when hot.
When driving, it struggles to get above 3000rpm in 4th gear and feels as though there is no response on the lower half of the accelerator movement. Will redline in neutral.
Also have some oil coming through the turbo pipe thats connected to intercooler, it is clean but not sure it should be there.
Think i may have a problem getting the codes read as well as the OBD2 only covers diesels from 2004. _________________ If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |

Hi i would try a coolant temp sensor - not expensive but could be the fault
in addition you can get the codes read by any good inde garage

Could do with changing temp sensor and thermostat anyway to be honest. Car takes forever to warm up!
But dont think this is it's major problem due to the fact car runs like pooh whether hot or cold, light on or off!
Will find someone able to test it for me. Used to work in motor trade so will go hassle some old mates. _________________ If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |

i used to have a 1.8 petrol vectra and had similar symptoms to above, think i changed the crank sensor to cure it _________________ atb kevin

Did you get to the bottom of this?
Had an astra that did this - it turned out to be the clutch pedal switch reporting the clutch was depressed, and the engine then shut the power down to prevent overfuelling. _________________ '98S reg Irish Trooper 3.0DT Citation (LWB 7seat)

Nah! Still not discovered what the problem is. Waiting for an appointment to get car on the diagnostics. Will have a look at the clutch pedal switch tho, gives me summat else to try! Thanks for the info. _________________ If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |
