Hi Rich,
I think that we should start the "Big horn low volts club" Possibly 93/4 were a poor vintage for alternators.
Does yours have the lcd heater control like mine? and is it affected?
A good alternator should push out 14.5 volts at the battery but would require some revs to do so. Anyway good luck.

Ahh, men in sheds in brown overalls, not enough of them around anymore. I used to use a guy somewhere outside Reading (many years ago now) who literally rebuilt starters and alternators in a big shed in his garden and did a corking job. I've just found a guy in Burnley to rebuild my Chevy starter as I've had sod all luck with so called factory recon units.

you know him Laughing
yep he's got the brown ovies Laughing Laughing
the reason i went looking was that recon bits never lasted,so i let him rebuild mine,18 months on no probs, and mine does get used a little Wink

the other bonus is if it came off your motor,it will fit back on Wink

Thats my problem with starters, mine is suffering from heat soak and won't turn over when hot, the first recon starter was completely dead, the second one works fine when cold but won't mesh with the flex plate when hot despite shimming it six ways to christmas. You can't bump start an auto although even if it was a manual I don't fancy bumping 5.7L's of V8!

He reckons he can get all the bits to rebuild my US Delco starter so I'm gonna stick with the one I know fits properly and works against a dubious "Reconditioned in Mexico" unit thats probably just had a clean and some black paint.

You can also get the alternator rewound to put out a higher amperage of course, making for faster charging and a better margin for adding electrical extras, like spots, a second battery, winch or a big ICE setup!
