Hi Eithen - Long time since I messaged last.  Got a problem with the old Trooper - sounds like bearing noise from the front.  It is continual, doesn't alter for anything.  I have replaced near side and off side front wheel bearings but still have the same noise.  Doesn't sound like diff or pinion bearing.  Did wonder if it was drive shaft bearing located on the diff  but no-one seems to have had trouble with them.  Trooper is 3.0lt trooper.  Would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi - thanks for reply.  No undue wear on tyres - they have probably only done approximately 500 miles.  Noise seems to come from the front centre of vehicle - sounds same as wheel bearing and I replaced both.  I couldn't think what else it could be as the noise was the same although you couldn't pin point it to either side in the usual way.  It doesn't sound like a diff noise as it is constant - still does it if you knock out of gear and coast.  Sounds like a bearing that has just started to pick up.

Does it alter with road speed or engine speed?

The noise is with road speed only and starts almost straight away.

Long shot  but I had similar sound on my trooper after a lot of searching at front end turned out to be rear wheel bearing  Embarassed

Sliders on rear  calliper stuck  Crying or Very sad

Might be worth a try only takes a little while to check and even if it is not the cause you have not wasted time at least you can be sure  sliders  on callipers are free. Razz

Hi - Thanks for the reply but I have just fitted front wheel bearings to both sides.  Calipers and carriers been off and are as they should be.

2 months ago fitted new rear calipers and carriers, sliders and brake pads and handbrake cables.

Pretty certain noise is from front.  Seems to come from in front of drivers position somewhere.  Doesn't alter note whether in or out of gear as long as it is moving.

Still think it must be the inner drive shaft bearing but no-one seems to have had to replace one

I would be looking at the upright needle bearings in the hub .. the ones the CV joint runs on.

Hi - just got round to looking at needle roller bearing as you suggested - shaft in good nick, bearing in pretty good nick but replaced it and seals anyway. Still the same noise coming from drivers side front.  Changed all 4 front wheel bearings.  As I said before continual noise under all conditions even when freewheeling (coasting - out of gear) .

Thinking of taking front prop off and trying it - what do you think?
