Used the search tool but no results for smoke only after idling.

Has anyone ever had clean exhaust at startup from cold, and clean exhaust at end of a run when warmed up, but lots of grey smoke if leave idling for 10 minutes?

It's failing the mot on emissions and I'm standing watching it smoke like a barbecue and confused why it's only after idling?

It only happens after idling.

Thanks

Emissions I'm told are meant to be under 1 and I'm at 2.40 on the mot printout

Blue/gray exhaust smoke means there's likely an oil leak and your engine is burning oil. Time to have a qualified technician check things out. The leak could be caused by several issues like leaking valve seals, damaged piston rings, or worn cylinder walls.

Hi,
Just noticed this
Yes, after long idle the Turbo seems to get some oil in it and causes a temporary blast of smoke, clears after a minute or 2.
However never caused an MOT problem.
Check you air filter, and clean the little MAP sensor.
Look up EGR VALVE here.
Does the engine check light flicker on idle.
Is the oil level correct.

Hi

Thanks for the replies

Engine warning light doesn't flicker

Engine oil level is 2mm below max

Oil leak very likely to some degree at 175000 miles yes, especially valve seals

Not checked liners or rings yet

Breather to manifold tube is dry inside

Cleaned MAP with contact cleaner and removed the tube to manifold and rammed a think screwdriver through and blasted with contact cleaner.

Removed vacuum hose from egr and removed to check for shiny metal all round to make sure it was seated.

Intercooler did have residue and this was washed out with petrol several times

So then decided to start bypassing systems to narrow things down. Bypassed turbo, intercooler and throttle body with flap, and also removed MAP completed.

Same symptoms. Starts cold or warm absolutely fine without notice smoke at all but leave it to idle and as soon as rev the engine there's a smokescreen of greys,  not white or blue.

Injectors are currently away being fully tested.

Only if they are all ok will the head come off to look at rings and liners

Cheers for now

Forgot to mention I've ruled out drawing air by both bypassing the tank and filtered direct to engine from a Jerry can and also dropped the tank, welded up sketchy patches, sealed all connections, made sure the pickup pipe was connected to pickup tube, checked all pipes to filter head, and sealed a plastic bag over the primer head incase it was drawing air.

Got an update
Injectors back, and one replacement
Yardstick sits still, starts and runs well
Smoke has changed appearance. No longer white, more tinged darker grey.
Smells of burning oil.
Needs a run first but does  seem to burn oil.

Bigger problems now unfortunately.

Now won't start. Tried white wire. Stripped down and checked timing belt and timing marks on both crank pulley and cam pulley all good there. Will try raising oil to high pressure oil feed tomorrow.

Was running rough but started ok, then on next start spun the engine over really fast.
Definitely getting fuel from tank but tried bypassing from Jerry can anyway.

Will update more when I know more
Tech2 is a likely next purchase to watch live data

Hi
Yes update - ROPCV needle jammed. Freed off using wd40 spout started up. Stripped and cleaned but snapped off the trumpet so bought a new ropcv. Still to fit.
Not happy at all though - despite genuine injector sleeve copper washers I get a lot of bubbles in the fuel return line and a lot less but still some if I use sealer around the copper washers. Two of the washers fall off injectors when I pulled them out. Not happy at all - lost trust in the reliability of the machine.
Having said that I'll still get it going as I finish what start. But there is no way I'm running this vehicle daily.

Copper washers need to go in dry anything on them and they don’t seal, and the washers will fall off  when you lift them out if they have just been put in as the carbon hasn’t had time to build up to hold them to the injector.
