I have read the workshop manual and seen that a special tool is needed, and there are some shims also.
Where do these shims go, and are there any good instructions with photos here on the website?
Is this special tool available for the avarage joe?

Hi
Just in the process of taking the head off mine. There is a cap that sits ontop of the valves, the shims sit ontop of the cap and run straight from the lobes of the camshaft.
Hope that made any sense.

You should check your current gaps before doing adjustments  - then if you find the gaps are wrong you need to work out what shims you will need to get them right ,its well covered in the on line manual .

You will need some sort of tool to do the job though .

Its pretty straighforward to do the job....as long as you read the manual!  Wink
You need to follow the book when doing them (its the same procedure as most shim over bucket engines), I've got loads of spare shims, as have a few others on here: Just let us know what sizes you need  Very Happy

the tool is a claw type thing that locates under the cam shafts and you pull it down on top of the bucket/shim assy which then presses down on the valve springs opening the valves a bit, you then place a small block under the camshafts in between the claws of the tool and it sits on the edge of the shim/bucket assy. then slowly let the claw tool up and the block holds the valves open allowing you to pop the shim out.
you could also turn the engine to open the valves then place a block in there and turn the engine back, this will have the same effect

My spare head has been pressure tested and shimmed and it´s OK.
The bad thing is that all the valves and buckets are mixed up... What do you think about that?? :/

Can I adjust the clearance on my table? Measure every gap, then unbolt the camshaft carrier, change some shims and refit.

Yeah I remember, I replaced that gasket on my Trooper with a smear of RTV to make it stop leak oil.
I would like to do that again when I do the head change.

What about the valve and buckets mixup, Is that OK?
I will grind the old valves in the seat and check for valve stem wear.
