Hi All
Last week-end I bought a carvan of 1100kg mgw.
Towing it the 90 miles back from the dealers, I set off in 4wd and after about 35 miles, a red warning light lit up, 'Auto/Ttransmission temperature'. I was about to pull off the motorway when my wife began to read the handbook. It said that on no account should the vehicle be stopped when this light comes on. So following the instructions, I switched into 2wd and third gear with powerdrive on and reduced speed. After about 5 miles the red light went out and the remaining 50 miles of the journey was uneventful.
Lucky that my wife was aboard else it could have been a different story because the transmission fluid could have 'boiled off' or some such strange scenario.
So, now I know. Keep in 2wd when towing for any distance.
I hadn't realised that Troopers would be like that, or is it just mine?
Best regards - Bluey |

Keep it in 2wd at all times unless you're off road as a Trooper doesn't have a centre diff so you will wind up the transmission and break something expensive, towing or not. You don't need 4wd on road and it will also save you some fuel. _________________ Phil

why did you set off in 4WD? was the van parked on a grass? you should never drive on the roads in 4WD. you'll get wind-up problems.
do a search on the forums about wind-up. _________________

Thank you for the replies.
Troops' obviously not as versatile as Range Rovers in the 4x4 mode, notwithstanding the RR's complete unreliability in every other department!
Oh well, you can't have it all.

Yep, RR's have a centre diff so you can drive in 4x4 on road. I hear what you're saying about LR reliability, the wifes company Freelander has had a list of new parts as long as your arm in 2 years/60K miles. _________________ Phil
