Hi all, have to replace my company car soon and due to the tax changes am considering buying my own vehicle and claiming the mileage allowance. However, my choice of vehicle would be a 3.1td auto lwb trooper . Given i have a budget of £9k for a vehicle and would like to own it for a 5 yr period, racking up between 15-20k miles per year, the question is simple. Am i about to commit financial suicide, leading to divorce and probable insanity or am i about to make one of the soundest decisions of my life?
Any, and i mean ANY, input would be welcome.
cheers

I have had a 10 year old 3.1td LWB Duty for a few months. It had been well abused when I bought it (cheap) and I have had to spend about £1500 on it since to bring it up to good condition. Things like servicing, belts, brakes etc plus some new wheels and tyres. I have found it to be very reliable and pretty economical (about 27mpg average). I understand gearboxes can go at about 100,000miles which can be expensive.
Overall I find mine great on and off road, reliable and well built. The only downside I have found is the price of spares which are expensive as there aren't so many about. Compared to Landrover spares they seem pricey.
Hope this is of some help.

I've got a '98 3.5 Automatic LWB and apart from new brake discs at the front (due to overzealous driving through the Pyrenees towing a caravan) everything on the car is still original, including the exhaust system. No reason to complain about that. I'd be a bit wary about buying a diesel though. By all accounts they aren't as reliable (which is a shame really). |

I've got a 3.1td R Reg ... Never had a fault in two years ...
If you do 15K+ yearly you will not be out of the petrol station 27MPG is what I get from the manual, so you'll get less in the automatic version.
All the best JIM. |
