Since I had a box of old Kenwood amps and stuff, and since I bought a new Kenwood USB head unit to replace the Alpine, I decided to put the old amps and sub in the new Bighorn. This is what I ended up with:

Head unit - Kenwood KDC-W534UA (USB head unit)
Front speakers - Vibe SE-K60's component speakers (£79 Halfords, cheaper elsewhere)
Rear speakers - JL TR525-CXI-coaxials (£99)
Rear Sub - Rockford Fosgate (old 10" thing in a box)

Amp front - old Kenwood 150WPC RMS
Amp sub - another old Kenwood 150WPC
Rear - head unit powered

I have a nice Kenwood graphic, which I thought might fit in the 1/2 DIN aperture below the ashtray, but the installer (Sextons) weren't keen on putting it in.

Sextons phoned me during the morning to tell me that the 16.5" Vibes would fit the aperture, but the window wouldn't clear the magnets, and suggested a spacer be installed, which would raise the speakers 1/4" away from the door cards. I agreed with this. They also phoned me to tell me there was a CD changer under the front passenger seat(which I hadn't known about). This came out, so the amps could be installed under the front seats.

They then phoned me to ask what I wanted putting in the rear space, since none of my Magnats that I had would fit. I said they could sell me some nice speakers, so they said that a 5 1/4 (13cm) would fit, but be too deep, so more spacers would be needed. £99 later, and the JL's were the solution.

The rear sub just sits in the load area, and can be removed easily if required.

All in all, the install lookes clean (apart from the silly fitting of the head unit - I can't get the slide attachments mounted to it properly, and it doesn't allow fitting of the faceplate at the moment).

Sound is great, on a par with previous vehicles I've had my gear installed in, but the rear speakers are somewhat muffled by the extra seats. Doesn't seem to matter, since todays' audio thinking seems to prefer the power at the front with the rears as fill-in and sub.

I have the same problem with the HU on my mk1, can't get the factory surround to saty on despite having hacked the dash around. Sounds like a nice install though.

I'm about to do an install on my chevy, RE8 " sub under the seat powered by an Alpine mono amp and a maca ttack 4 channel to power the fronts (possibly bridged as theres no need for any rear fill in a small pickup cab) with initially the existing 3 way 6x9 JBL coaxials in the front doors at some point to be replaced by a decent set of components. Should rock in such a small space.
