Been away for the weekend with the caravan on the back of my 1996 Bighorn 3.1TD LWB, went up to Bridlington fine no problems , its about 120 miles, did usual driving style in and out of o/d when required. No pronlems. On the way back after about 80-90 miles in normal drive about 60 mph accelerated to overtake, box changed down ok went up to 3000 rpm 60 mph then wouldnt change up a gear or back down when slowing down. Pulled off on slip road, gearbox went down the gears round the roundabout ok and back on M!, up to 3rd gear (i think) and same again, wouldnt change gear........Could this be overheating? I have read about the sensor on the gearbox could it be this? Used it this morning for wotk and everything is back to normal...

Do they have an oil cooler?

If not you need one for towing IMO

Found this on an old post from Grandad..........

there is an transmission oil cooler in the radiator

i tow a caravan with my95 3.1td auto no problems also tow vehicles for recovery up to 2 1/2 tons
the cooler fitted seems adequate if you would like to make sure kenlowe are the people to see they do kits for most motors www.kenlowe.com/

overcooling can have adverse effects so its important to get the right balance

Its a good idea if you do fit a cooler to then run the fluid back through the in rad cooler before it goes back to the box as this has the effect of regularising the temperature, especially in winter when overcooling can be an issue with a tranny cooler.

well Rolling Eyes ..... I've come across the same problem as you Chrisuzu this weekend. wouldn't change up to top gear Confused The only difference from all the other times I've gone down the A1 is, I was driving into to a head/crosswind Question

am going to change all the oils this week Auto box and while am it will also do the TF box and diffs.

See if it makes any difference.
