I have just, wisely or not, invested in a 93 3.1d swb trooper which looks like it could cause some trouble.

I would like to know how to remove the instrument binacle from the dashboard so I can get to the speedo cable which I believe is broken. I've undone two screws at either end but it still won't move!

My other problem is clouds of bluey black smoke and very poor performance. Before i purchased the vehicle it had a new fuel pump and i have changed the oil + filter and the fuel filter since. I then went to a injection specialist who advised that in his opinion there was not really any injector problems. He reckons that the turbo is knackered! There does seem to be a lot of oil in the intercooler and around the inlet. Any ideas?

If the turbo does need to come off, has anyone tried this at home? I'd appreciate some advice.

On a turbo on any engine the centre bearing is fed with oil to lub it and sometimes water to cool it. If the bearing is worn then oil can find its way into inlet or exhaust side hence smoke in exhaust and oil in inter-cooler. The way to check is remove both inlet and exhaust sides of the turbo and hold both sides and turn the rotor and try to take up any play in the bearing and if you can feel the rotor touching the case it's a gone case Sad .
Main problem with turbo's is high speed/load driving and not allowing the engine to cool down for a few moments.
