what a pain! although i love my 3.1 duty, who ever decided where the filter was going to go is an absolute plonker! when i changed it for the first time the last person had not done it up very tight and i managed to get it off. when i replaced it with the new one i did it up as tight as i could with my hand and then kept an eye on it, no leaks. now i have come to replace it can i get the sod off!!! once the filter wrench is on you have about half inch to turn the filter, just not possible!! oh, and the filter wrench (a tighten metal band one) has just snapped i daren't put a screw driver through it as i still think there is just no turning space there!! what next, take it to a garage? any one got any magic tips please |

there is a three leg filter wrench that fits on the end that is easyer to get them undone ,i use the slimmer filter that is fitted to the later 3.1 or the 3.0 one is the same ,it is much easyer to remove ,there is more room round the sides, hope this helps. |

I just did mine today, I use the fabric type strap wrench, a long extension and short breaker bar and I have no problems with it. _________________ Phil

Yeah, you slip it over the filter, roll it around the metal bit in the right direction and it then grips and undoes the filter. A breaker bar is just a solid non ratchet bar with a joint at the end. _________________ Phil

DAB.
For your sanity get yourself a cup type filter wrench from International Tool Co Ltd. I got one for my Trooper 3 Lt TD and one for my Subaru Legacy. Magic.
Check that it is a 90mm X15 flutes; that costs £7.95p inc. VAT. You don't need to buy a set.
Go on ....... you and your knuckles deserve it! |

The chain variety is what I use on any and all filters. As many extensions as needed or wobbly's or spanners, no bother. _________________ 1994 KZJ70 Cruiser (currently filling the garage and causing some head scratching)

I didn't mind the 2.8 one, but this 3.1 thing is a PITA! the problem is with a mk1 and a 2.5" exhaust flange in the way it is almost impossible.
Easy with a cup though. _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Hi
first of all take the cross member off, makes it so much easier to work on and oil doesn't go everwhere

Left 1/2 a cup of oil drop on the cross member - the mud soaks it up and will stop it rusting _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

update.
could not get it off with the fabric strap. sourced a chain wrench off a friend and after testing it on a can of paint was feeling quite positive. got under there this morning and it took about 10 seconds before a big dirty drip of water dropped in my eye! the second one went right in my ear!! so that was it i instantly gave up and took it to a garage. he struggled! he had a cup set but none of them quite fitted it tight enough, he was swearing but he eventually got it off with a 3 legged jobbie that tightened up with a ratchet, quite impressed and only charged me 15 euros. i can not believe that i had managed to get it so tight! i do not remember being angry or turning green! going to get one of them cups i think.
i will also add that laying under a motor trying to work on it compared to standing under it, is absolutely cr*p!
thanks everyone for your help. |
