1989 bighorn 2.8di turbo intercooler.
i did a fuel filter change a couple of weeks ago. trouble ever since.
now when i get to 2500-3000 rpm mark it starts to really struggle and does not want to go higher and if i put the clutch down it stalls!
there is a bleed screw on the top of the filter housing which i have tried a few times, but only once did it make any difference-i took it for about a 5 mile drive---back roads and carriage ways and it was really lively and responsive.
next day the troubles are back.
am i right in thinking that this points to air in the fuel line somewhere between the filter and the injectors.
i`m new to diesel engines and have never even seen an injector.
i dont mind getting my hands dirty and having a go but i dont know where to start.
can anyone give me any advice please. or their own thoughts on the problem.
thanks

I would recheck the filter is seated properly, and not drawing air in.
I have never had to bleed mine after a filter change but if you wish to there is a bleed screw on top of the injector pump.

Did you fill the new filter with fuel before fitting?

when you say "the top of the injector pump" do you mean on top of the filter housing? or is there somewhere else i should be looking? where is the injector pump?

well, i dont know if i did it right or not.this is what i did.

engine not running.
loosen the 17mm bolt.
plunge the plunger 4-5 times.(fuel all over drive)
do up bolt.

took it for a spin and it seemed great untill i got to 3000 revs in 3rd then it went flat again and then stalled at the roundabout!

what do you think, scrap it!  Shocked

Another common problem is the o ring in the hand primer can fail and let air be pulled in, seeing that the problem only started after you changed the filter theres a good chance the problem is around there.

ok, i`ve ran out of time today so that will be my next job on a dry day. i think your probably right because if everything was air tight any air would of gone through with the fuel quite soon after the initial start up after changing the filter.

thanks for your time and effort.

keep an eye out for me in the near future cos i may need more pics from your repair book!!!! Very Happy

engine is running great now, faultless.better than it ever has in the 2 years i`ve owned it.
it revs quick and high and pulls stronger through all gears.
i bypassed the standard filter with an in-line one from halfords.
so simple and cheap yet so effective.
it seems i must of always had a tiny air leak somewhere on the filter housing/plunger and by renewing the filter recently i actually made it worse.
happy now Very Happy

I would get a proper filter when you get a chance, it serves as a water trap as well as lasting about 20 times longer than an inline one  Smile

Nice to see a happy ending  Very Happy
