25% is very safe, over 50% and your getting into 'it will cause damage' territory.

I regularly run my 3.0td on a 90% veg oil with no problems.  Had to change the filter after the first 2 tanks as it does clean the pipes well.  Power is very slightly down at lower end but the engine runs smoother and I get a better return on miles wnen running distance.  All in all cheaper and better.

From Wiki

Quote:
A related historical note: at the request of the French Government the Otto company demonstrated a diesel engine at the 1900 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) which used peanut oil (see biodiesel). The French government were at the time exploring the possibility of using peanut oil as a locally produced fuel in their African colonies. Diesel himself later tested extensively the use of plant oils in his engine and began to actively promote the use of these fuels.

There's an interesting bit of history where Mr Diesel was on a boat across the channel to sell the idea to the brits, and he 'disappeared' at some point on the voyage....  not read the article so don't know if it's covered in that...

Why bang?

There's no reason for engine damage - in the worst case it'll be the fuel system which will have problems.

might well go bang the way it went tonight, had to go and pick me daughter up from work so was going along the bypass when a mazda and a golf tdi overtook me so bit of red mist and overtook the golf doin 115mph, couldnt catch the mazda Mad  Laughing , looks like changing the fuel filter and cleaning out the airfilter with the air compressor has realy made a difference, certainly cleaned the cobwebs out  Laughing

certainly felt the need, the need for speed hahahaha
