Just to clear things up, is this a fairly steep road with potholes or a really nasty 45 slope thats full of wet slimey clay
If its the first one then just reverse down it using the brakes as little as possible, if its the latter dont drive it _________________ |

From the book pages 17/18 Isuzu Trooper A guide to 4x4 driving, the book came with every new trooper.

Low range first gear is the best for this manoeuvre. Make sure it's firmly selected before setting off. If you are happy that both you and your vehicle can cope with the slope , gradually feed the nose of your Trooper over the edge of the hill. Then, once you feel gravity taking over, make sure your feet are well away from any of the pedals, its a good idea to press your heels into the base of your seat.
The temptation to apply the brake will be strong to begin with, but you must let the Trooper drive down the slope under its own engine braking. If it starts to skid under engine braking, the slope is far to steep for a novice. |

Sure but a good idea to know what to do if it does start to skid!
I mean, OK I have just found out it's started to skid so on consulting my manual it's too steep. What now? Can't press Esc and start again!
Lets face it a manufacturer is not an off road instructor. But as said best no attempted in the first place.
However I think now the point has been raised as a mater of safety it should be made clear that sometimes the only way to regain control is to give enough throttle to regain steering. If the front end is slewing round when reversing on engine brake, steering will not make ANY difference as the wheels have no traction at all. It will keep coming round, at this point there is a very real possibility and high probability of a roll. _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Thank you all for the info much appreciated, the road I will be using is a rough loose stone one, steep but not that bad, I am wondering if a vehicle came down I would have to reverse, not knowing the best method, out of gear and on the brakes or reverse gear 4wd only once you put it in reverse (AUTO BOX) it starts to pull you down a bit unnerving!!! Any tips |

Get someone to walk up and give you the all clear, they can then stay there to stop anybody from coming down
Two trucks on the same hill is a recepie for an accident. _________________ |

If you have to reverse then quickly press the brake select R then take your foot off, practice near the bottom first _________________ |
