Doesn't look like the 2.8 in my MK1 or the pics I've seen of the 2.8 Fronty engine, the inlet manifold looks different from both. _________________ Phil

Its a 2.8 ok, we are just head scratching about the ancillaries, and what could cause your problem.
Piccy of what it should look like in a 2.8, but as you said your has got all the 3.0 stuff bolted on.

Now my 2.8 doesn't look like that, the inlet manifold is different. _________________ Phil

The 2.8 Rodeo has EGR valves like the frontera, thats why the inlet is different to the UK spec mk1 Trooper. _________________ |

The thing at the back with the pipes missing is a heat exchanger for the egr system, we have something similar on a tractor
The pipes would have been connected to the coolant system but looking at the black sooty marks just down from the pipes could mean this exchanger may be knackerd causing the pressurising in the coolant system that your previous owner mentioned (could have killed the previous engine).
If i am right just remove it and blank it off, may help your smoke
The injector pump looks to be a fly by wire type, don't think the original 2.8 had fly by wire, if so then it could have been fitted from the original engine and may not be set up for the replacement engine as they may differ slightly causing your black smoke. _________________ 2011 3.0l Hilux Invincible

Are the exchanger's expensive to buy or should I not bother ?
Its got a throttle cable so if the pump was fly by then I would have thought that the throttle should be?
How can I check to see if they are set correctly?
thanks in advance guys |

Hi there, would this cause the excessive black smoke?
I had noticed if you really hammer it on the motorway the temp guage rises. |
