hi,
anybody got any thoughts on winter tyres for cars? getting fed up at moment, as lots of snow on untreated roads and dearly beloved wife claims trooper every morning, leaving me the pug.
has anyone ever used studded tyres on tarmac? will i get lots of sparks?
reason i ask is that half journey to work on untreated roads, half on A9, not sure if studded tyres on A9 will please plod.
cheers _________________ 3.1 td 1994 citation |

here in france every one drives on winter tyres and they are quite awesome, especially in the snow. there seems to be a very good choice here. we have snow tyres on our renault traffic that are very good, they were only 280 euros for the 4. i had a set of goodrich ultragrips on our old escort and they were awesome!!! transformed the motor in the snow, i used to slam the brakes on to see how far it would skid.
my advice to you would be to get a set, the difference is unbelievable. |

There was a thread on this subject on another forum I'm a member of and a member from Finland made some good suggestions. Nokians are supposed to be pretty good, the trouble is most of them are very soft compounds that will wear out pretty quickly on dry roads. Studs will be a no no on a dry road. You might be able to find some decent mud and snow remoulds if you can find out what club rally drivers use in the winter. _________________ Phil

I put a pair on my 306 HDI estate in November - bought a single wheel, and fitted one to that and one to the spare. When spring comes, they come off and the energies go back on the front. They are frankly amazingly different.
In cold temps they are masses more flexible and grip like a soft compound tyre. They shift tons of water, handle nicely, and I've been more successful with my 306 than the trooper in 2wd mode! Get a spare rim and give it a go! |

my works van is running michelin alpins and they are great, but we run them all year round so couldn't compare to how the van goes on ordinary tyres. alpins it is i think _________________ 3.1 td 1994 citation |
