Question 1999 Astra 1700td GM low blow engine, came in as having a fuel pump problem, changed the pump for a good unit with the same part number, can get it to start and will drive well when running but as soon as it's turned off for even a minute it's a pig to restart showing signs of no fuel or fuel drain back! The usual things have been checked;fittings, filter housing,leak- off pipes etc. I've even changed the crank sensor on the offchance.
Any ideas??

Try fitting a non return valve where the fuel line goes into the pump

Funnily enough that's my next port of call Wink  Only thing is; I clamped the hose after turning the engine off and it still didn't want to know when I tried to restart (after taking the clamp off)!

Does the leak off line go into the fuel supply line or the top of the injector pump ?

It goes into the fuel return banjo on the pump. It's got the Bosch VP30 (I think) pump.

Oh - Thats one thing that it might have been out the window then ,ok get a can or a jug with fuel in  up on the top  of the engine somewhere then a pipe into the pump inlet and start it up then stop for a while and see if its better or worse.
Have had a few like this where the non return valve on the lift pump (internal) was faulty letting go the fuel and would not prime up again .By doing the can thing you are putting a positive fuel pressure on the lift pump thus eliminating the valve.
