Question My local garage who are servicing my vehicle have told me that they have heard stories that the radiator is prone to failure around 70k. Anybody else heard this.

Hi Willie,

The 3.1D is prone to failure Sad , however it is not definately going to be at 70k. The radiator went on my 3.1TD (1996) after 103K. Evil or Very Mad

If you get it re-cored when it does eventually say good night, then it will not cost you as much. I paid £120ish, but had to strip it out and replace it again. It is however a very easy job to do. Smile

I hope that this helps.

Regards,

Skoly

Mine went at about 90K, i also took it out and had it recored, approx £130.
Warning, when mine went i only drove it a few hundred yards to a garage and it still cooked my head, needed to replace the gasket and have it skimmed, so beware.

We had an engine rebuild at 94k (not sure if genuine) got car back home within a day rad was spurting. Had to have recore cost about £150 couldn't get a new rad, hard to come by, so was the only option. But agree with above very easy job to take out and replace.

my 1989 2.8Td rad blew its original coreat 158,000. Am I right in thinking that these are better cars reliability-wise than the 3.0 & 3.1's? £200 for an Isuzu dealership recored replacement hurt a bit, but that was 7,000 miles ago!

The radiator does tend to fall apart. I think that it is simply down to the vibration associated with a big diesel (1995 3.1TD in my case) which you will find affects other things e.g. the stay on the dip stick tube. I have had the radiator recored twice now (in 222,000 miles) and the price is approx 170 + VAT for a good job. If you look after the cooling system then you will find that the cooling capacity is very impressive and it takes a great deal of work to get the engine hot.
