nothing on the dash-- how easy is it to adjust them yourself? I know in some cars there is a setting switch behind the headlights

best done with the bonnet up look at the headlight and you will see a small cut out just above the glass and one to one side of each headlight the adjusting screws are just behind them.

Be aware that on older cars they may be seized, newer ones tend to be into plastic blocks so don't so have a look at the condition first and if they are steel to steel then lubricate with a little penetrating spray like plus Gas first. I still say although you can do it roughly by parking the car a certain distance from a wall and adjusting the pattern on the wall best results will be obtained by getting them set on a machine at an MoT station, shouldn't cost much more than say twenty quid I'd have thought.
