This has allways been a can of worms BUT.
After spending all day in an Auto on some difficult lanes (And owning a manual)
Where the hell is the engine braking  Shocked
Is there a magic button to make an auto work when you need 1mph downhill?
If so we need to know because brakes are pretty errrrrrr fun when it gets real slippy  Laughing

This is serious BTW

You need to manually select 1st gear or low if the gearbox doesn't drop down on its own
The advantage is you have no clutch to dip
cheers

They are better for climbing in allot of cases! I would prefer a manual but loads use autos for challenge trucks and the like.

I'll have to do some more research, maybe put an auto and a manual together with the same driver  Idea

Just tried this today on a steep hill popped it into L gear it did gear down but i was still travelling at 12 - 15 mph ... does switching the over drive off help and also when off road would low ratio box help slow things down on a steep decent, i found myself on the brakes way to much yesterday.  Embarassed

In low box and lo gear mine moves at a slow crawl even going down hill i get great control just using the throttle pedal

If you are talking about needing the brakes down the steps on the second part of the first lane, then yeah you will need to ride the brakes manual or auto. On a standard 2 to 1 transfer box you will never go down something like that on engine braking, that would be madness! Auto or manual you will be riding the brakes. On smother steeper descents yeah, but not of steps like that.

No Matt, we are on about engine braking, allthough watching a truck go down steps without brakes would be a sight to be remembered  Shocked  Laughing

Hi Mat
On one of the last down hill lanes you and chris were on about not using your brakes for as long as possible,
Had I not been riding the brakes all the way down i'd have over taken the lot of you. I was in 4L and L
Think marky and tim and already left before these lanes.

In places where 2nd low would be fine in a manual 3.1, Or is the engine braking so good on the 2.8 and 3.1 manuals that I'm being fussy  Confused
Maybe I am because I also find the 3.0 manual to lack in the same area  Laughing
