Hi Mat
On one of the last down hill lanes you and chris were on about not using your brakes for as long as possible,
Had I not been riding the brakes all the way down i'd have over taken the lot of you. I was in 4L and L
Think marky and tim and already left before these lanes. |
Ah, the hill down into Bamford. I can do it without the brakes but only just. But that says it all then.
Wonder what the compression ratio is of the 3.0 is? Still, loads use them for proper challenge off roading and proper rock crawling, it's what you get used to I guess. They are better on the climbs, but worse on the descents. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.... _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Up hill in an auto would have been easier I would have thought although that could have something to do with experience was using the clutch far too much initially then got hang of creeping realising it would creep up in gear _________________ 3.0TD LWB Citation |

Yeah, up those steps is first low, don't touch the clutch at all and use as much throttle to keep you going smoothly maintaining momentum. So long as you have clearance and some one spotting you the trick is to not stop and start but keep going maintaining momentum.
You did that perfectly but were as you say riding the clutch a touch. These things have the power to climb anything slope in first low. More than the limit of traction on any surface.
Autos give you the chanse to speed up on a climb as the maintain power while changing up. You can change gear on a climb in a manuel so have to hit it in the gear you want. _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Yes. Out of the three of us that tried it so far I'm the only one to have made it. I don't know anyone else who has done it.
The first truck was a very nice fronty with a big lift and 33s. he blew a CV and bent his center tie rod. The second was Chris who popped the end off his front prop, that said it was more bad luck as he was running a prop with a CV on the end which ran out of travel and popped the cir-clip off leaving the cage to drop off. Don't think he would have made it though.
One of the steps is as tall as a tyre! I found you met a step front and back at the same time often too. I don't think you could make it without a locker, I would love to be proved wrong though! _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Don't think I have ever used the brakes when going down a slope.
1st gear Low Range, sometimes even need to use a touch of throttle to regain traction.
Up hill I think Auto's do a better job, even better with a 3.9 V8 behind it as My rangie does. |

If you find the engine runs away would fitting an exhaust brake help?
Not sure how useful it would be offroad but maybe interesting to find out. |

I have had the 3.2 auto for a while now and allthough really nice to drive I would prefer a manual offroad.
BUT, we can test this at buildwas next weekend, there is a nice hill there and we could time the different trucks going down with all feet off pedals _________________ |

I know Auto's don't have as low gearing as the Manuals, has anyone fitted the 3:1 transfer case gears?
I prefer the slip you get in an auto and plus you get a torque multiplier effect but down hill the Rangie runs away as it has 32" tires on it.
The Trooper is very controlable and the torque from the diesel is really suited for offroad. |

They both have the same transfer ratios
1-1 in high
2.283-1 in low
but
gearbox is another matter
Auto 1st is 2.856-1
Manual 1st is 3.767-1
My question now is how fast would a 3.2 manual be _________________ |
