I've got an intermitent problem on my 95 Bighorn 3.1TD Auto, only really noticed it on cold starts but what happens is when i start the the car the Cambelt Light - Fuel Water Filter Warning Light - Fuel Light - Ignition Light And Battery Light all stay on and the Air Con/Heater Control doesn't work, then after about 10 seconds there is a click and everything starts to work just fine, am i right in believing that the click is from a Relay of some kind.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and know how to fix it, any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Had exactly the same prob. exept that oneday the lights didnt go off and the heater didnt come on, took the motor for a checkup and found that the relay marked "MAIN" under the bonnet was burned out, this was caused by a faulty alternator which i am in the proces of swapping. try removing the relay and the heater should work and the lights should go dim, but you dont get full charge for the batteries.Just purchased new alternator unit for £194.00 inc. vat.
PS i drive a 95 3.1d

I've got a '94 Lotus Bighorn, and have noticed the lights sometimes don't go out until you give it a bit of gas - is this indicative of a problem? I thought it was normal behaviour for it to wait until there was some charge being put back into the battery, or something.

Cheers,

Steve.

Same thing too – on a ’96 3.1TD Duty. The lights go out and the heater comes on as soon as I give it a few more revs. Have just thought that this was normal!

Interestingly, after re-reading my manual (Japanese to English translation), the starting procedure says that the accelerator should be depressed fully (when cold), and a quarter or so of the way when turning the key. When I do this, the engine fires up much better, and also the lights go out almost immediately.

Who else starts the engine this way, and do your lights go out straight away when you do?

Cheers,

Steve.

got this sorted at last, the alternator had gone causing the charging relay to burn out.
got a local 'alternator specialist' to fix it ,not cheap Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad .all working fine now Very Happy
only thing is when starting, got to rev to 1500 before warning lights go out and blowers work but this is ok.he did explain it was to do with the new alternator being slightly different to the original in design, but what was said was like double-dutch to me.

my 3.1td has done it from new - 170,000 miles/11 years so I wouldn't worry too much about it Wink
