Hi. Have just bought first caravan.and when plugged in both sockets the panel in van did'nt show that it was charging. The chap from the workshop brought his testing gizmo out and said there was no output from the grey plug with ignition on then engine running. As I have only towed the horse trailer I have never used the grey socket before. I am assuming it is a fuse or relay therefore could anyone tell me what and where to look and test.
Thanks. _________________ '95 3.1td Citation LWB. |

do it the easy way dont use your aux socket, if you park up one night and forget to unplug you will wake up to flat batteries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ 3.1 td lotus bighorn l.w.b |

There should be a split charge relay (usually under the bonnet) which would of been added when the wiring for the towbar was done. There is always the chance that the grey (aux) socket hasn't been wired in at all!! Does the van power up from the grey socket at all??Does the fridge work on 12volt with the engine running?? First thing that I'd do is check and clean up all of the connections on the rear of the socket or if it's corroded
change the socket they're only £2-£3) the wiring code is: 1 yellow,2 blue,3 white,4 green,5 brown,6 red,7(centre) black.(if it's got 7 wires) |

Hi, the relay for my grey cable on the tow bar is actually tucked inside the rear bumper , so it could be anywhere the fitter fancied, I know its a stupid question but have you checked the fuse , it should be a 25 amp and it's not nesseccarily any where near the fuse box , mines is on the other side of the engine bay. good luck. _________________ da boss was here! Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I thought I would check the fuses and relays but quite frankly I didnt know where to start as there are fuses and relays in the car and under the bonnet and as madmum said there could be others any where so I took the cowards way out and took the troop to my local towbar specialist where after about 5 mins it was fixed. It was as madmum suggested, a fuse. he replaced fuse and I am sure he said he tweaked the relay as it was not giving out enough voltage and now it is.(you learn something everyday as I did'nt know you could adjust relays). _________________ '95 3.1td Citation LWB. |

I spent many an hour learning to adjust relays in my telecoms apprenticeship and then was gainfully employed in the old Strowger and crossbar telephone exchanges adjusting them to keep them working 'reliably'.
But in a car its unlikely, and if they got that dirty inside their covers then the contacts must be wearing out due to high current loads and no suppresion causing arcing of the contacts. _________________ LotusTower - '93 Lotus Bighorn |

Hi LT..... I agree some industrial quality relays will have a mechanical adjustment to ensure the relay will function within its energy field in a similar way you would adjust the contact points on motor vehicles ..... but I have not personally known of a relay to adjust for ouput.
