After a lot of banter and nagging I have finally purchased a 1991 Isuzu Trooper Very Happy . All the rest of the group have discoveries and there are plenty of local specialists offering parts and accessories. We are going to be taking these vehicles off road, and I am looking for steel wheels to replace the alloy ones that are currently on there at the moment. I have phoned some companies out of a 4x4 magazine all of whom have quoted me a lot of money and some have not even bothered to give me the time of day.

What I am after is some advice on whether there are any cheaper alternatives or whether wheels off a different vehicle would fit. The other piece of advice is what sort of protection would I need for the underneath. At present there is a sump guard, centre diff guard and I believe one for the gearbox, but there seems to be nothing for the rear axle. Is there a guard for this, or is one needed as there doesn’t seem to be one listed according to those suppliers I have phoned who were happy to help.

Any advice would be gratefully received on what to do too these vehicles. We are going to have a lot of fun I know, but I want to be prepared without having to spend a lot of money straight away.

Chris, if you're after steel wheels, try an early (please excuse mentioning this on this hallowed forum) 'Shogun'. They're a direct swap and should suit you down to the ground - literally! Very Happy

Don't know wether you got my e-mail, but 'Performance Products' who advertise in the '4x4' magazine sell a steel wheel & tyre combination with remould tyres (don't laugh, they are rated for about 85 - 90 mph and have to pass major EEC regulations now) for about £320 for 5 including VAT & delivery. The mud tyres I chose are noisey on road but unstoppable off road. I chose 10.5 x 15 on my 1989 2.8td & they do look good. I had to add wheel arch flares though, to keep legal.
