It's worth watching your bootup sequence for any mention of a recovery option.
Most of the big manufacturers tend to include a specific recovery partition on the hard drive to enable you to restore without CD media.
Just power the unit on, watch the initial text phases of the bootup for any mention of testing, recovery etc and press whatever key corresponds to that and then read through whatever comes up for a recovery/reset to factory config type option.
If there isn't a partition, and the laptop is in Warranty, Acer should either supply restore discs or restore the OS under warranty themselves.
Fraid I don't have any Vista discs, a couple of weeks working with it was enough to convince me I'd never part with cash for that piece of ****  Very Happy

The HDD will have a recovery partition which will reinstall and or repair. You can use it as already described. Failing that you can download the boot.ini file online and boot it from a usb drive. Vista is a horrible OS and personally I would recommend getting windows 7. I've had 3 systems that have lost the boot.ini file from Vista and it's a pain in the rear to sort it. If it's under warranty get them to sort it.

I believe you have to hit F2 on the very first screen as you switch it on to get to the advanced settings on an Acer.

Thanks for the help so far, here's a little update.

It's a desktop, I've made up the restore disc's and have them to hand.  But the only option is to restore factory settings and wipe everything Confused

The little black screen says boot manager in a white block at the top.  Telling me it failed to start, because vista is a pile of.......

Please insert Windows disc, choose language and then repair computer.

The file Vista has managed to misplace is Boot\BCD

I just tried  F2 with no luck, I then tried all the F keys only f12 works.  But that only takes you to the "boot off the CD screen"

I don't think I'll be buying acer again.  Phoned them yesterday, just to ask for a cd.  THey want £50!!! Shocked

Joe.

p.s

I managed to get the keyboard working so that makes thing a little easier Wink

Sorry I forgot all about it Embarassed

It says on the label Vista Home Premium.

On the plus sude it's developed a................... well lets say a new feature.

It now says after the bios. "a disk read error occurrer
press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

I'm thinking either Vista really is a pile of ......... or the Hard drive is not that great and on the way out.

Now that sounds like the HDD is on it's way out. I'll have a look today to see if I have a home premium disk laying about in my junk boxes. It's worth a try. Failing that it'll be a new HDD and buy 7 instead.

Sounds similar to some issues we had at work recently. Zero filled the hard drives using a free tool from Western Digital, then reinstalled Windows (Win 7 Enterprise Ed)

Hope it all works out for ya!  Wink
