Hi,

Quick question... are the twin batteries connected in series, parallel or through a split charge relay?

Cheers

Hello Chris
The two 12v Batteries are connected in parallel so you end up still with 12v..

Okay then, if they are in simple parallel, and are 85Ah batteries, how come they only fitted a 60A alternator ? Especially considering the excessive cold cranking that is necessary to start this motor. I seem to remember the Alt on my old 2.8TD having more output than that. Also, what exactly does the charge relay in the fuse box do ? is it a simple cut out relay ? I'm asking because one day I intend to fit a winch, and 4x100W Driving lamps, and I have often wondered whether it makes a difference which battery the feed cables are run to.

Hi, I fitted a 9000lb winch to my bighorn, to the big Battery on the offside, put the winch solenoid box down the side of it.
Winch runs spot-on, I do have engine running at same time.
I used it last week in some"controlled tree felling". Worked a treat.

I think the charging relay senses the output from the alternator, then allows the charge voltage to all the axcillaries.

The battery on the nearside is for your towing electrics, caravan fridge etc.

I was thinking of fitting an external jump start socket (saves me opening the bonnet every time i give somebody a jump start...). Should i use the nearside or offside battery?

Cheers

Chris,
Have you fitted a jump start socket to your trooper?
Need to get a new set of jump-leads and was thinking of going down that route. If so which battery did you use?
Cheers

HI Webby - I have yet to fit the external jump start socket... when i do im probably going to mount it on the rear then i can use it to power compressors and other gadgets.
Does anybody know which i should connect my leads to and also which battery should i use for my towing electrics?

Don't know if this will help but here goes:

I've recently pulled the complete loom from my 3.1 donor car to put in into the 2.8 and the 2 batteries are connected with no relays or anything in between them. This must mean that the charging relay etc only monitor the power needed to keep the batteries charged as a whole and not individually. Therefore it won't matter which battery you connect the load to.

Chris: What size cables are you thinking of running to the back for your outlet? I was going to put a winch on the back but the voltage drop worried me with the distance.

I have got some 16mm stuff used for wagon batteries - there wont be any voltage drop if you use something of that size.

Didn't see the question about the towing electrics.

The standard wiring is in the loom you just need to find it. It is a multiplug designated H44 & it looks to be tucked inside the back trim low down on the offside.
From memory there is a 30amp feed in the plug that I used to keep a fridge running but can't find it on the diagram.

Cheers! I have done the towing electrics by removing the multi plug and soldering & heatshrinking the wires (i really hate scotchlocks!). I will send the rest to the front end when i wire my jump start point... if the batteries are wired in parallel it shouldnt matter which battery I use, especially as i always run the engine when starting somebody (dont want to get stuck myself!)
