My 98 Monterey has some degree of standard protection over the sump, not that beefy but it is there.

Kinda agree and disagree, if your out laning mostly there's only a few lanes that warrant armour for rocks. If driving a ford how do you know something isn't in the water like a rock or bit of tree? Again with p+p sites, on the whole don't warrant armour (depending on the site) but it only takes one wrong move to hit a tree stump/rock/piece of discarded landy!  Personally I'd rather have armour under my engine/gearbox, all of the scrapes that plate of mine has (it was on a highly modded truck with good ground clearance) tells me it does its job, It's cheaper then an engine too!

for me its more for when I use deeply rutted and humpbacked lanes, the whole weight of the car will be resting on the sump at certain points and moving forward too, and you never know whats been put there either.

Save yourself some money, I have been here for over 6yrs and never seen a post about a bashed sump.
Unless you are going to try and trash it at a playday then it just isnt needed, Gary and Twister have/had highly modded trucks that they like to thrash.
No dissrespect guys but a stock truck is very capable and doesnt need extra armour, fitting a plate can make it bad offroad as you then have a low point that is huge.

I just double checked mine and  Embarassed
It does look like something is missing  Shocked
I'm sure my old one had something up to the sump but not under it, but providing adequate protection from the front  scratch

i looked again today and there is a flimsy plate bolted on to the back of the very front bashplate. i think take that flimsly plate off  and use the holes for the front mount of the new guard and then use the crossmember a bit further back for the rear mount. that should cover the bottom half of the engine completly and not be too fiddly to do.

cardboard out next week and then make it up in steel, stainless or ally depending on what we have laying about and the availability of the plasma cutter  Very Happy

i'm with steve and gary on this one .... i was a bit worried about landing on a rock at our derby bash on some of the lanes as i havent made my sump gaurd yet (but will be)  Wink
i'd feel safer knowing it's there than having nothing at all .... a bit like my 4wheel drive ... i don't use it every day but nice to no it's there when needed  Wink
