crumbs - could be any number of things. It does sound like a small air leak, which is very difficult to say without seeing the engine operating. Check the simple things like the fuel filter being tight enough, & check where the pipes go to see if any are weeping or loose, but I would go to a diesel specialist and ask his opinion.

To check for air leaks you could use an old trick of spraying suspect joints and or pipes with carb cleaner. You'll notice that if you spray a drop in the air intake the engine should start to die. Listen for this when spraying the pipes etc. I used this trick regulary on my old M3 which are very susceptable to air leaks from the joint between the throttle bodies and the head.

good luck and be systematic
