Hi,

I have a 4JX1 3.0TD 2001 Trooper (68k miles) and my coolant keeps blowing out the expansion tank at the side of the radiator.   I have no diesel in the oil, and no oil in the coolant, but I keep having to top up my radiator coolant.   I have had the radiator removed and pressure tested and it came back fine, just for good measure I have replaced the cap on the rad.

any ideas.

TIA
Trevor

Was it a genuine Isuzu gasket??? No others are recommended.

Yes, genuine Isuzu part.   and no diesel in the coolant, the coolant being expelled is just slightly rusty coloured water, with no oil, or diesel smell/colouring.

TIA

How much is coming out? Are you filling the expansion bottle to max or just enough to cover the tube when cold? And get coolant in it not just water Smile

Forgive my ignorance.  I just have water in the radiator, not using an special coolant.   The amount coming out depends on the usage of the engine.   On short journeys none comes out on loner journeys say 30KM about 200ml.   On long journeys say motorway driving where the speed is up at 120km for extended periods of time then I have to put in 4 to 5l of water.   The expansion bottle is half full at the moment.   Have tried it also with it full.

TIA
Trevor.

I would get a sniff test done on the water. Sounds like HG still an issue or head itself.

We have the same problem.  Garage has spent 4 hours pressure testing and doing everything and can find nothing wrong.  No water leaks from anywhere say its not even head gasket.

Its still happening, the expansion tank is getting full and sending water over the air intake cover.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be.

Getting to the point where we are afraid to take it on long journey, even got recovered from holiday last week as didnt want to put car under pressure towing caravan.

Had nothing but trouble since got the car in Feb, after having accident with previous monterey and it being written off.  Just wonder what can go wrong every time we take car out.

Now at the stage of getting rid and having something completely different.

expansion tank needs to have enough coolant in to cover the bottom of the tube when cold. any more and it may overflow.

does coolant smell of diesel?

Have you filled the radiator to the very top?
Make sure there's no air in the rad and as stated just fill the expansion tank to the 'minimum' line
If you started with clean water and now its rusty brown i reckon the head gasket is leaking inside on just a water line, or between 2 cylinders  Crying or Very sad
Don't worry about coolant until you've fixed the problem btw, it won't make any difference to the problem, but as soon as all is well, flush out the water and add a good quality antifreeze/summer coolant to the maximum recommended ratio  Wink

Hi Thanks for replying.

Rad was filled, and expansion we always have on minimum, until this problem.

Water was red, the colour of coolant already in there.

Went out yesterday stopped at destination and no water underneath, left there went mile and half and water running out, left there after few minutes and temperature gauge went right up.

Stopped and sorted it to get home. Got home and no water running.  This journey was about 25 miles each way.

Now going back in garage tomorrow and they checking thermostat.

I've got the same issue on a 3.1. Would be good to know how 10nrd got on. I suspect mine to be cracked head. So long as I drive steady and keep below 2000rpm all is good. Anything above that and coolant starts to be blown out through the expansion tank. At idle the top hose to the rad is hard and there is a constant flow of gas out of the expansion tank overflow pipe so would suggest exhast gas pressurising the coolant, a bit like a pressure cooker. I have had the issue of occassional overheating on long journeys ever since I got the truck a few years ago but it has become gradually worse. I fitted a new good quality (BGA?)  gasket at easter and the head looked fine but I never had it pressure tested  Embarassed . I will be fitting a replacement head in a couple of weeks time, so fingers crossed.
