Hi, Got a bit of an over heating problem on the 3.1 Bighorn. Firstly when towing cattle trailer the engine overheats at any longish hill. I have not let it boil as have managed to pull over and let it cool. I put a good secondhand radiator  in it and flushed through and new thermostat. Still much the same. Is it probably Head Gasket although not showing typical signs?
Second over heating is with the auto box which i had an oil change done, not sure if it was a flush or change, but whatever the A/T overheat light came on so i stopped. to let it cool . On checking the level in the corredt manner the level was 2 inches above the hot level mark. Also oil was dribbling out the vent pipe and did not look like new pink oil Would that cause the over heat? I phoned the garage that did it and he said no but was rather at a loss to explain the high level. Wish i had done it myself . It is going back to him Monday but i have lost confidence in what he says . Sad
Any Ideas  appreciated.

auto box is cooled through the rad so if the engine is getting hot chances are the gearbox will be as well, did you check the gearbox with the engine running? i'd change the thermostat first but the head gaskets are a weak point on them

Yes checked with engine running. I Do you think overfilling the gearbox to that extent would make over heating of the gearbox worse? I had not heard head gaskets were a weak point on that engine. Are they particularly difficult to do? If i get this sorted i would like to fit an external cooler for the gearbox. Where is the best place to get one from?
