Fortunately I've just had a good shufti at the passenger side one and with a little help from Mr JB Weld in one small wee hole it'll get through this MoT easily as it's still pretty solid, giving me time to do it properly later in the year.
The drivers side I've had a call back from the dealer and outriggers are no longer available new so I've eventually found someone to bend me up half a metre of 3mm thick channel at 100mm x 100mm which will fit in the mount albeit slightly wider than stock. I'll pick up a new bolt from my local engineering supplier once I've cut the old one off and then cut the old mount off, build the new one and bolt it to the body and weld it on to the chassis and plate the hole that appeared in the chassis when I prodded it hard. It never rains but it pours! _________________ Phil

Where did you get the channel from and what sort of size did you use? I'm guess 3mm wall thickness.
Are you just butting it straight onto the chassis and welding it or have you bent any flanges where it meets? I guess box section would work at a pinch as I could just cut it diagonally. |
Yup 3mm it was, scabbed it from my old place of work (Hargreaves boat yard)
I have only done one set (by the spring hangers) these I butted up to the old rubber and plate, a rush job for the MOT.
I would use new ones if you have a good moterfactors close by as they are cheap if can find unbranded lose ones from a box, if you know what I mean, otherwise use the old ones.
If it was me I would put a jack under the body to stop any drop when you cut the old one off, although if the old ones are *beep* I suppose it will have happened if it was going to
Then just butt it up and tack it on all sides, don't weld one side without a tack on the other as it will pull away as it warps.
Box would work well as you would get two mounts with one diagonal cut |

Yeah I just put a screw driver through the small length of box on the bottom of the tow bar, the one that butts up to the hitch plate. |

I would imagine as there are plenty of body mounts on these things it's unlikey to droop much with just one off at a time. I'll have a look and see if I can get a jack to it but TBH I'm not sure I have anything with a long enough reach other than my trolley jack. My plan was the same as you, remove old bolt, cut of old mount, use as pattern to drill hole, bolt up to mount, tack all round, remove bolt and rubber, seam weld to chassis, plate other hole in chassis between old mount points, paint, refit. Why does it come on the hottest day of the year! _________________ Phil

I'm still waiting for the fabricators to call to tell me the section is ready, they've got to change the baldes over on their folder before they do something this thick and they'll only do it when they've finished their current job, they said it should be today but tbh its too damn hot to even contemplate grinding and welding today.
This is a diagram of what I need to do
Should only take me a day or two if all goes according to plan. _________________ Phil

Righto, picked up the channel from the fabricators, also got an open invitation to have a rummage through their scrap bin if I need to, nice guys. Surprise surprise I actually managed to undo the old mounting bolt and it's even reusable, that was quite a shock as I expected it to be seized, snap or be otherwise objectionable. I've cut the old mount off and made a big hole in the chassis again, so I'm going to weld a big plate on across the whole of the area that the bracket mounts to so its got something firm to be welded to. Thats cut out and ready, I've just been and picked up the right size hole saw to cut the hole for the bush at the end so its all stations go. I think if I'm honest this chasis has only got another year or two left in it before it literall falls apart from the inside out, I think the previous owner must have parked it in the sea every day.
I might get some done tomorrow afternoon but we've got a hospital apointment in Leeds in the morning and saturday I've been volunteered to help a friend move all their furniture into their garage from upstairs as teir roof comes off and ceilings come down next week so it might have to be sunday before I get into it again. Pics to follow. _________________ Phil
