The manual says this should never be changed but I find that hard to believe!

We have a 12 year old and 9 year old 3.1 trooper. The fluid on the 9 year old, in from japan, was very brown. We've had it changed and now it's sort of orangy brown. Should it be changed again? The 12 year old ones is also orangy brown - should we change that again?

Some people say that changing it moves the 'sludge' around - so what should we do?

When the fluid is changed you never get it all out unless its done with a proper vacuum unit, as there will be a fair few litres left int he torque convertor, as soon as you run it the new and old oil will mix hence the almost immeadiate colour change. Also was the filter cleaned out at the same time (I think its a wire gauze type in the sump of the box rather than a replaceable one like my Chevy) so again if not that will discolour the new oil. I'd maybe consider having it done again but find a decent auto box specialist that will do the filter and vacuum the torque convertor out so it gets a complete fluid change if you're worried about it.

what Philp says is right when its drained you only get half the fluid out

if you cant get it done professionally
the only way to do it is to remove the sump take off the filter jack the front of the car as high as you can and then leave it drain for awhile when replacing the filter after cleaning make sure the sealing ring is in good nick fit the sump (no gasket )use silicone gasket refill while engine running 3ltrs then run through the gears put in park and check level fill to level if this process is repeated 3-4 times over 4 weeks the oil will be as clean as you can get it and the majority of the dirt will be removed
solenoids in this g/box have a tendency to stick when the oil is old and dirty

Do I need to worry since the gearbox is working well?

Am I just being an overanxious parent?

if the gearbox works ok leave it alone

you say goldy brown it`s ok
dark brown is bad as it shows the clutches have been slipping and burning the oil
