Blimey, did you read my mind?  I can never remember which pin does what on a relay and I need to wire my spots up this week.  All I need to know is which is the main beam wire so I can take a feed from that to the switch and then to the relay.

Pull the plug off the back of the light then stick a multi meeter in the holes whilst flashing the lights.

The way I've always wired them before is to take a feed off the main beam wire to the switch and then from the switch to the relay.  This means you can only switch the relay when the main beam wire is live so if you dip your lights the spots go out even with the switch on, so stopping you blinding oncoming traffic or having to fiddle about finding the switch.

Embarassed  Didnt look at the trigger for the relay...   as the Eithan/Phil said... the above will need wiring into the main beam!

Just finished wiring the spots on the bumper...

On a MK2 3.1 the trigger wire I've used is the off side headlight yellow feed wire (it's the top pin on the plug on the back of the lights) -- Cut straight through and put a chocolate block in -- don't even bother trying with the battery in place Wink. The spots don't appear to come on when flashing, but jesus... they don't half come one on full beam Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

All in all, all the bits to wire the spots (inline automotive fuse, 35A relay, and a handfull of bullet connectors for disconecting every thing) came to £5.35, so a bargain extra 110w up front.

I've also fitted fogs to the winch bumper - embedded them in the steel, looks kinda cool - I'd put a piccy up, but one of the fog light bulbs has just blown, so I'll replace that before putting any

Mine are Hella Jumbo 220's with 100W bulbs and at the same time I've got a set ofg ring 60% brighter bulbs to go in the headlights so it should be a big improvement.  Need to get it done as we head off to France in a weeks time for a short visit to lock up properly for the winter and we're planning on doing the journey overnight.

Don't mean to be a kill joy, but hasn't the government/Eu land just decided to make it illegal to have spot lights wired into the main beam? I know you have to have a seperate switch, but I heard they made it an offence to use them on the public road, do you know what the rules are?

I do understand that you could always have them off on the road, and on/off with the main beam off road, but are there MOT implications, or type approval issues? Does anyone really care...?!

As far I im aware they are fine on main (full) beam but not allowed on dipped headlights.

Quote:
The headlamps are checked for alignment with a Beam Setter. After first aligning the equipment with the vehicle, the left and right headlamp beams are checked to ensure they are correctly set so as not to dazzle other road users.

Test Description

All required lights are checked for:

operation
condition
security
Side lights and headlamps

are the correct type and colour
dip and aim.
Stop lights, indicators and hazard lights*

are the correct type and colour
do not interfere with each other in operation
driver's tell-tale works with respect to indicators, or there is an audible warning system.
Rear Fog lamps**

must be fitted to the centre or offside of the vehicle
tell-tale must work
must not be affected by other lamps and not be obscured
must be red.
Number plate lamps

All lamps fitted must be working.
Rear reflectors

There must be two red reflectors fitted reasonably symmetrically, securely attached and not obscured.
* Must be fitted to all vehicles first used on or after 1st April 1986, but if fitted, must be tested.
** Must be fitted to all vehicles first used on or after 1st April 1980.

A friend of mine was telling me not to have them on the normal road lighting circuit, it may be pending or he may be mistaken. Something the farmers were talking about, perhaps a feature in farming weekly, or air rifle world or similar publications. Anyway the folk that like to go lamping rabbits in 4x4 vehicles (not my scene!) were under the impression there were limits on the amount of light now allowed on full beam as well as the previous limits on dipped lights.

I don't know if it is true, but it strikes me as the sort of thing they might do, so I just wanted to check. It may just apply to comercial vehicles, tractors etc, I thought I heard noises about lorries being too bright so ban them recently, it could have been that. Sorry if I am mistaken, but you can't be too careful.

I haven't got my spot lights yet, I have no money in the winter when I need them!

There always has been a limit on the maximum out put from headlights hasn't there? it's why people use spots, multiples of the maximum Very Happy

OK... after a lengthy bit of google searching the law is as follows (for now). Additional spot lights must only operate when the main (full) beam is active AND also have their own isolation switch to allow the main beam to be operated independantly.
Soooo its all down to your local MOT station/VOSA/Police to enforce this... whether they do or not is another matter  Rolling Eyes
