Sounds like a daft title but when I press the 4wd button on my 3.0td trooper I can hear a couple of clicks from the gearstick area as though a solenoid is working when I press the button in but no 4wd green light comes up on dashboard..

I'm rather hoping its a dead bulb in the dash issue (optimist to the bitter end me) but how do I check that 4wd is working (or not ) without driving it into a bath of slurry and see if I whether all 4 wheels are spinning?

Have a read: http://www.itocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23620

It could be something as simple is a position switch or bulb.

problem solved... pressed the button again last night during darkness and there it was all green and stable on the dash...  did it again today and now that I know where it is I can just see it in daylight... Its not missing its just not very brightly illuminated...
